The park was opened to the public in 1880 through the support of Arthur Guinness of the Guinness family,  who funded its redesign and landscaping. park by digging trenches.  However, British forces quickly took positions in nearby buildings,  particularly The Shelbourne Hotel allowing them to fire down on the rebels.
