role in the Easter Rising.  Built in 1818 and designed by architect Francis Johnston,  the building originally served as the headquarters of Ireland’s postal service. against British rule.  On 24 April 1916, Patrick Pearse stood outside the building and publicly read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic,  declaring Ireland an independent republic. with British troops left much of the building destroyed by fire and artillery.  Although the uprising was ultimately suppressed, the events at the GPO became a powerful symbol of Irish independence  and helped inspire the later struggle that led to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922.  Today, the restored building stands as a national monument and reminder of the origins of modern Irish
