This hedgehog or gráinneog as it's known in Irish is handmade card is a reproduction of an original art work by Steven Farrell.

The word gráinneog roughly translates to 'the ugly one/thing' in English but I'm sure you'll agree, hedgehogs are adorable! Plus the word grá in Irish basically means love.

This unique hedgehog or gráinneog greetings card is perfect for any occasion, like a birthday, Christmas or just to send a message to a loved one or someone who loves the Irish language, mythology and Irish wildlife.

The name appears on the front of the card in Ogham writing (a little info about Ogham appears below), Irish and in English.

A sample of the back of a card can be seen in the images here

Ogham

Ogham also known as the ‘Celtic Tree Alphabet’

is the earliest version of the Celtic language

and is thought to have been developed as early as the 1st century AD

Animals were sacred to the Druids

who would develop relationships with them,

believing them to be guides,

their ’totem animals’ would be their allies in the physical and spirit worlds,

aiding them in their journey through life and beyond.
