'St. Stephen's Green, Dublin' 

St Stephen's Green is one of Dublin’s most historic public parks and played a notable role during the Easter Rising of 1916. The park was opened to the public in 1880 through the support of Arthur Guinness of the Guinness family,  who funded its redesign and landscaping.

At the northern entrance stands the impressive Fusiliers' Arch,  built in 1907 to commemorate Irish soldiers who fought and died in the Second Boer War.  During the Easter Rising in 1916, a group of Irish rebels led by Michael Mallin and Countess Constance Markievicz  occupied St Stephen’s Green and attempted to defend the park by digging trenches.  However, British forces quickly took positions in nearby buildings,  particularly The Shelbourne Hotel allowing them to fire down on the rebels. 

As a result, the rebels were forced to retreat into the nearby Royal College of Surgeons,  where they held out until the surrender later that week.  Today, the park and its entrances remain important reminders of Dublin’s social history and its role in the events  that shaped modern Ireland.
