'General Post Office, Dublin' 

General Post Office (commonly known as the GPO) is one of the most historically significant buildings in Ireland  due to its central role in the Easter Rising.  Built in 1818 and designed by architect Francis Johnston,  the building originally served as the headquarters of Ireland’s postal service. 

During the Easter Rising in April 1916, Irish republican leaders chose the GPO as the headquarters  of their rebellion against British rule.  On 24 April 1916, Patrick Pearse stood outside the building and publicly read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic,  declaring Ireland an independent republic. 

The GPO became the command centre for the rebel forces, including leaders such as James Connolly,  until heavy fighting with British troops left much of the building destroyed by fire and artillery.  Although the uprising was ultimately suppressed, the events at the GPO became a powerful symbol of Irish independence  and helped inspire the later struggle that led to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922.  Today, the restored building stands as a national monument and reminder of the origins of modern Irish independence.
